Services and Hearing Aids

This page will walk you through what hearing aids are and how they work, the different brands of hearing aids, and the services that provide them.

This information was last updated in August 2026. Services, brands, and information may change

What are hearing Aids?

Hearing aids are small electronic devices designed to help people with hearing loss hear sounds and speech more clearly. They usually have three main parts:

  1. Microphone – picks up sounds from the environment.
  2. Amplifier/processor – processes and adjusts the sound.
  3. Receiver (speaker) – sends the adjusted sound into the ear.

In practice, sound travels from the microphone to the processor, which amplifies it for the receiver.

However, different brands of hearing aids are capable of different things, so it is important to choose the right brand and service.

It is very important to note that hearing aids are just that: an aid. Not a cure. They help to make sounds clearer for people with hearing loss. They do not fix hearing loss.

It is also important to know that hearing aids are not the only treatment. However, this site is focused on hearing aids. If you are looking for another treatment or are considering hearing aids, seek medical advice or speak to your GP.

What will hearing-care services generally do?

Hearing-care services typically provide a range of support for people who are experiencing hearing difficulties. This usually begins with a hearing assessment, where a hearing-care professional tests the person’s hearing and explains the results. They may also examine the ears to check for problems such as earwax or other visible issues.

If hearing loss is identified, the service may discuss suitable treatment or management options. Private hearing-care providers can often recommend and supply hearing aids from different manufacturers, depending on the person’s hearing needs and preferences. They will usually fit and programme the hearing aids, as well as explain how to use, clean and care for them.

Most services also provide follow-up appointments and ongoing aftercare. This may include adjusting the hearing aids, carrying out maintenance or repairs, and providing advice if the person’s hearing needs change. Some services may also offer earwax removal and recommend additional assistive listening devices, such as remote microphones or TV listening accessories.

Below is what makes each of the services listed unique as hearing care services.
